Synagogue Administrator  
Laura Coombs, Office Manager, joined our staff in late September 2005.  Laura’s background includes extensive experience in non-profit and volunteer management.  Most recently, she served for fourteen years as the Executive Director for the State organization of Literacy Volunteers of Maine.  Laura holds a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from the University of New Hampshire. She is an avid lover of animals and the great outdoors. 
Bookkeeper  

Teri Berenson, our bookkeeper, joined the Bet Ha’am staff in 1990. A native Mainer, Teri is a graduate of Deering High School and the University of Maine at Orono.  Before joining Bet Ha’am, Teri ran the office at Levey Day School for 13 years, and she continues to assist with the bookkeeping at Shaarey Tphiloh Synagogue in Portland. Her daughter Meg is married and teaches at the Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Teri’s constant companion is her Rotti-Lab, Rangeley.

Religious School Director  
Our Religious School, led by Director Orly Mendelson Biggie, has guided the Judaica and Hebrew program at Bet Ha’am for more than 15 years. A  native of Israel, Orly is a graduate of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and she holds a master’s degree in Jewish history from Baltimore Hebrew College. She is a certified Reform Jewish Educator and has taught at colleges in Baltimore, as well as in Jewish day schools and afternoon religious school programs in Baltimore and Portland.  Orly coordinates a volunteer staff of more than 40 teachers, mostly parents, who work with more than 225 children in grades one through 10.  Orly’s daughter, Razi, works in the theater in New York City, and her twin sons, Gilead and Harel, are in the 5th grade.
