Learners' Shabbat Service
Starts: 10:00 am
Ends: October 28, 2017 - 12:00 pm
Description: Did you know that you're only supposed to bow at the beginning and end of the Avot v'Imahot, the first blessing of the Amidah, and not at the end of each of the blessings?

Were you aware that the closing words of V'Shamru are shavat vayinafash, not Shabbat vayinafash, and that a change in these words changes the meaning?

Have you ever noticed that the Bar'chu is a call and response, where the service leader invites the congregation into prayer and the congregation responds, and that it's important to listen to the first line without joining in?

If any of this is news to you or if you'd like to learn more about the nuances of Jewish worship, how we move, and why we say what we say, join us for our Learners' Shabbat Service this Saturday at 10:00 AM, where Rabbi Saks will provide instruction and information to make your worship more meaningful.

Contemplative Shabbat Worship
Starts: 5:30 pm
Ends: November 10, 2017 - 6:30 pm
Description: Please Join us from 5:30 to 6:30 PM as Jane Sloven, Sharon Newman, and Joseph Py lead us in welcoming Shabbat. Our worship is best described as contemplative, meditative, or transformational — and it combines styles of prayer rooted in both the Modern Reform and Jewish Renewal movements.

With familiar Friday evening prayers set to beautiful melodies, wordless melodies called niggunim, and short periods of silence between prayers, this service offers the opportunity to sink deeply into the serenity of Shabbat. Sharon plays guitar and leads us in song; Jane leads us into silent prayer; and Joe and Sharon co-lead a Kabbalistic Kirtan version of Dodi Li in which Joe plays the djembe (an African drum). We close with the joyful Shlomo Carlebach melody of Pitchu Li.

Poetry as Prayer with Maine's Poet Laureate, Stuart Kestenbaum - Shabbat Service and Lunch & Learn Writing Workshop
Starts: 10:00 am
Ends: November 11, 2017 - 2:30 pm
Description: Poetry as Prayer with Maine’s Poet Laureate, Stuart Kestenbaum

Join us on Saturday, November 11 at 10:00 AM for a powerful program with Maine’s Poet Laureate, Stuart Kestenbaum. Stuart Kestenbaum is the author of four collections of poems, Pilgrimage (Coyote Love Press), House of Thanksgiving, Prayers and Run-on Sentences and Only Now (all Deerbrook Editions), and a collection of essays The View From Here (Brynmorgen Press). The director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts from 1988 until 2015, he has written and spoken widely on craft making and creativity, and his poems and writing have appeared in numerous small press publications and magazines including Tikkun, the Sun, the Beloit Poetry Journal, and on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac.

During our Shabbat morning service, Stuart Kestenbaum will share a talk, Prayer as Discovery, Poetry as Discovery, discussing how a writing process can lead us into unexpected places and reading poems he has written that bring a devotional spirit to everyday activities.

Our Shabbat morning service will be followed by a lunch and learn where, with Stuart Kestenbaum’s guidance, we will read poems, talk about non-judgmental ways to write, and write together using a few simple prompts. The emphasis will be on using writing as a way to discover what we know about our inner and outer worlds.

Former US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser has written “Stuart Kestenbaum writes the kind of poems I love to read, heartfelt responses to the privilege of having been given a life. No hidden agendas here, no theories to espouse, nothing but life, pure life, set down with craft and love.”

This event is free. RSVPs are requested by email to karen@bethaam.org or by calling the Bet Ha'am office at 207-879-0028.

Pay Member Dues

Bet Ha’am plays an important role in all of our lives, providing an open door for all during High Holidays and throughout the year.

The need for supporting the Annual Fund cannot be overstated. These unrestricted funds ensure we can cover our basic, day-to-day needs and meet our budgetary responsibilities, from salaries to building maintenance to Hebrew School supplies.

Membership dues do not cover the full cost of Bet Ha’am’s operations. We rely on the generous support of our members and friends to make Bet Ha’am available to all, regardless of ability to pay.
