Advocacy Training Day with Maine People's Alliance and the Bet Ha'am Tikkun Olam Council
Starts: 12:15 pm
Ends: January 27, 2019 - 2:30 pm
Description: Tikkun Olam - Do you want to (learn to) become an effective advocate for positive change in the world? Do you want to put your Jewish values to work for Tikkun Olam? Do you want to learn the principles and tools for effective legislative and regulatory advocacy? Come learn from the experts at the Maine People's Alliance and the Bet Ha'am Tikkun Council at our Advocacy Training day on January 27, 2019 from 12:15 to 2:30 PM. A delicious lunch will be provided.

At the training, we will have the opportunity to learn what works (and what doesn’t) in contacting legislators, writing letters to government, making phone calls, preparing legislative testimony, and more. As the new Maine legislative session gets under way, there will be a number of bills relating to our core issue of Immigrant Employment, as well as other important issues, that will benefit from public input. Having the Jewish voice heard loud and clear from the Bet Ha’am community will be vitally important as we support or oppose legislation and regulations that effect New Mainers in their efforts to become more secure in our community.

In House Social Services
Starts: 10:00 am
Ends: February 13, 2019 - 12:00 pm
Description: We are pleased to be working with Kelly Newkirk, a social worker intern from Jewish Family Services (KJFS), at Bet Ha'am on December 12 (and the second Wednesday of each month thereafter).

For those who are unfamiliar with KJFS, they provide a range of services:
You probably know about the food pantry and diaper bank - but other programs include Hanukkah Lights (a winter clothing drive for families), adult learning opportunities, Kosher Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors, Friendly Visitor services for seniors living alone or within elder care facilities, information and referral, and case management.

KJFS is also available to provide support and advocacy to individuals and families in transition. They can help navigate issues that arise due to job loss, assist with concerns that arise when an elderly loved one needs additional support, and are available to help apply for food, child care, fuel, and housing benefit. Finally, they're here if you simply need someone to talk to.

To make an appointment, please call KJFS at 207-772-1959. Walk in appointments will also be welcomed, on a first-come first-served basis.
Bet Ha'am Provides Monthly Meal at Friendship House
Starts: 4:30 pm
Ends: February 13, 2019 - 5:30 pm
Location: 390 Lincoln St, South Portland, ME 04106, USA
Description: Friendship House (390 Lincoln Street, South Portland) was built 30 years ago as a residence for men (and, initially, women) who were coming out of a rehab program and needed transitional housing before they could move into their own home.

The Bet Ha'am community has provided a monthly meal to residents of Friendship House for many many years, and we continue to do so today.

Here's how it works:
Bet Ha'am members bring an evening meal for 14-16 residents one Wednesday a month from September through May.

Faith Moritz and Solange Kellermann coordinate the meal, calling on a group of 10-12 people, who bring food to Friendship House. We suggest each person cook for about 8-10 (or more if they are so inclined). There is a theme for each month, but no one has to adhere to it too closely.

Food can be dropped off anytime during the day, as long as it's there by 5:30, when dinner is served. Faith and Solange make sure the food gets on the table by then.

The men love the food we make, and are deeply grateful for the support. Please join us in continuing this wonderful tradition.

Please contact Solange Kellerman at 577-0648 if you are interested in contributing towards our next meal.

Pay Member Dues

Bet Ha’am plays an important role in all of our lives, providing an open door for all during High Holidays and throughout the year.

The need for supporting the Annual Fund cannot be overstated. These unrestricted funds ensure we can cover our basic, day-to-day needs and meet our budgetary responsibilities, from salaries to building maintenance to Hebrew School supplies.

Membership dues do not cover the full cost of Bet Ha’am’s operations. We rely on the generous support of our members and friends to make Bet Ha’am available to all, regardless of ability to pay.
