Treasurer’s Ledger

Prepared by Tom Rosen, Board Treasurer

The purpose of the treasurer’s report is to provide transparency about our current financial position. This report includes considerable detail – you will have access to most of the information that the Finance Committee and the Board use to make informed finance-related decisions.

Note, we often refer to FY18 and FY19.  FY is short for ‘Fiscal Year’ or financial year, which is different from a standard calendar year.  Bet Ha’am starts the Fiscal Year on July 1 each year and ends on June 30 of the following year.  So FY18 refers to the year beginning July 1, 2017 and ends June 30, 2018.  FY19, the current Fiscal Year, began on July 1, 2018 and will end June 30, 2019.

There are sets of documents:

  • Monthly Summary, FY19 (July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019)>>: This package includes the current year’s standard monthly financial package, the documentation reviewed by the finance committee and board. It is prepared after each month’s end.  There is a short, written summary about the health of our financial operations before the financial reports.  We do not prepare a monthly report for the first two months of the fiscal year (July and August) as there is minimal meaningful detail during the summer.
  • Final Reports, FY18 (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018)>>: This package includes extensive narration and final drafts of last year’s reports, including:
    • Profit and Loss (P&L) Report
    • Balance Sheet
    • Consolidated P&L and Cash Flow Report
    • Surplus/Deficit table for the past 11 years
    • Mortgage Information
    • Dues Breakdown
    • Religious School Information
    • Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) Survey, showing how we compare with other synagogues
  • Q&A>>: Questions and answers that we feel are interesting and/or informative.
  • Treasurer’s Ledger Contest>>: Rules and winners of the financial report contest.

You might consider reviewing the second link, last year’s report, first, as the narration discusses how to read documents like a Balance Sheet and P&L report.

If you have any questions after reviewing the Treasurer’s Ledger, please contact me, Tom – Board Treasurer, at tom@bethaam.org.

I look forward to your questions and thoughts,

Tom Rosen

Pay Member Dues

Bet Ha’am plays an important role in all of our lives, providing an open door for all during High Holidays and throughout the year.

The need for supporting the Annual Fund cannot be overstated. These unrestricted funds ensure we can cover our basic, day-to-day needs and meet our budgetary responsibilities, from salaries to building maintenance to Hebrew School supplies.

Membership dues do not cover the full cost of Bet Ha’am’s operations. We rely on the generous support of our members and friends to make Bet Ha’am available to all, regardless of ability to pay.

Judaica Shop

Congregation Bet Ha’am’s Judaica Shop is establishing itself as a leading regional opportunity for unique Judaica jewelry, holiday gifts and supplies, children’s items, and everyday items.  The Judaica Shop is open 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM Tuesday-Friday and Sunday mornings when our Religious School is open.  Please call (207) 879-0028 for inquiries or requests for special order items.  This page will soon have photos and ordering information for specific Judaica items.
